Crucial reception
Kine A week told you „The powerful 'crooks slip out’ is peopled which have a colourful assortment out-of crucial and you can arresting characters, and they, skilfully manipulated of the journalist and manager, enable the flick so you can tread liquids effortlessly. It is merely to the end up it begins to break apart, however the slap-up finale rescues it on 'red’. Ingeniously staged and you can smartly dialogued, it has zero high issue for the way of living down their extremely unattractive name.” [ 8 ]
Month-to-month Flick Bulletin said „The film motions on an easy pace, the new talk try advanced and you can characterisations fundamentally energetic. Richard Brody from the The fresh Yorker listed „It terse and you will taut motion picture noir are based on the fresh personal and you may professional problems of one’s title reputation, new criminal mastermind (starred by Dick Powell) about a stylish illegal local casino. This new film’s writer and manager, Robert Rossen, creates a good multidimensional chess game, to possess mortal stakes, ranging from Johnny, their employer (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s spouse (Ellen Drew), an effective cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you will a great scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whose brother (Nina Foch) worked in the local casino and you will old a good corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). New caustically epigrammatic script, the cast’s suavely regulated body gestures out-of like and you can possibility, and you can Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and stylishly cocky photo (in addition to their political conscience) make this pugnacious yet detail by detail spectacle a low profile classic of one’s genre.” [ 10 ]

Cobb, as the a police inspector, plus up the score . As the plot pursue a common trend, the fresh new characterizations was new together with activities good enough in order to overbalance. Dialog try terse and you can relevant, avoiding the emotional, phoney reach. Strange cam bases show up now and then to escalate attention and you may briefly arrest the attention. Solid teamplay by Robert Rossen, doubling since manager-scripter, and you may Milton Holmes, original copywriter and you will associate manufacturer, as well as helps with making it a smooth manufacturing.” [ eleven ]

Its mainly a matter of viewing Mr. Powell undergo his paces smartly when you’re a huge throw off actors and you may stars offer your conventional assistance. Evelyn Keyes plays the nice little woman whom brings about brand new best in him and you can Ellen Drew 's the sleek and you may slinky vixen which will get your on jams. Thomas Gomez is actually oily once the villain and Lee J. Cobb do another in a position trip given that an exhausted police inspector exactly who in the long run closes the scenario. A great amount of consuming and you may smoking is done of the the worried.” [ a dozen ]
